ABOUT Kate Davenport

Favorite WOD:  I enjoy running and most strength movements.

Least Favorite WOD: any workout with thrusters, the assault bike, and wall balls.

Tell us about your sports & fitness background: I have always enjoyed working out in classes with others. I’ve tried everything from yoga, step, boot camp, Pilates, and circuit training. For me, the class format provides routine, opportunity to socialize with friends, stay in shape and clear my mind.

Working out in the pandemic solo was super challenging. I purchased a Peloton bike and every single bike ride felt like a chore. A year later, I sold the bike. It was during this time I realized how important having a routine and social experience is essential for me. I honestly think I enjoy socializing as much as working out. I guess that’s the extravert part of my personality.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD... What was it, and how did it feel?

Brie Ried introduced me to Cross Fit maybe five to six years ago when our kids were in pre school together. At the time, I was interested but it was difficult to find childcare to work out. Then, she got me back in when I turned forty/ forty-one and the timing was right.

I remember the first WOD had the bike and overhead weights. I honestly do not remember too much more about it. The bike was the worst and continues to be the WORST! I felt okay with the overhead press. Also, I remembered feeling overwhelmed trying to learn all the moves; however, everyone could not have been kinder or more welcoming. The Kennett CrossFit community is a special group of very supportive individuals.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)?  Since starting, I have gotten stronger. When I look back at previous workout results in Wodify, I am so pleased how far I’ve come.

For this calendar year, I set the personal goal of one strict pull- up. Through working hard with Coach Brie in individual sessions and attending classes consistently, I accomplished my goal. There is no better feeling and it encourages me to continue to challenge myself in other areas that seemed impossible. All the coaches are amazing at pushing us to put forth our best effort each class and giving us tips and recommendations on tricks to improve our performance. I still think of how Kevin described to me how to do ring dips and box jumps when I am doing those moves.

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?

I am less intimidated to try things. For instance, box jumps and going upside down both scared me when I started. Now, I do both and continue to improve. Recently, Coach Nick gave me a tip on how to shift my weight in a wall handstand to touch my shoulder and I did it! I started yelling at him. I was so excited. If you would have told me I could do that five years ago, I would never have believed you.

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFKSQ moments:

The hero workouts are challenging and I love how we all congratulate each other after we’ve completed it. I enjoy celebrating my friends’ milestones, when they get to ring the bell. The March Open was fun! That was my first time participating in the scaled division and I enjoyed it.

Any advice for people just getting started?

Just show up and pick one thing to focus on during that workout. Instead of thinking about any negatives from the workout, try to pick out a positive. Be consistent and don’t compare yourself to others. You’re competing against yourself, not anyone else. Also, record your results in Wodify consistently. I need to be a little about this myself.

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?

I enjoy gardening, going to the beach, and reading.
